2022 & 2023 Malakoff Shiraz

Vineyard: Malakoff Estate Single Vineyard located at the southern end of the township of Landsborough, has become of the of the states celebrated grower sites. It has a Northern exposure and faces the southern end of the Pyrenees mountain range which is directly across the valley. Being situated in Western Victoria, the vineyard is subject generally to a drier than normal climate in summer. The vineyard is subject to light winds which come up from the valley floor and has many cool nights followed by warm sunny days perfect for ripening  full bodied Shiraz.
 
Grape Variety: 100% Shiraz (Old Block Clone & PT23)
 
Soil Composition: Red and yellow podzolic soils overlying on a soil made up of schist and quartz.
 
Training System: Vertical Shoot Position (VSP)
 
Winemaking: Combination of Hand harvested (for whole bunch) and mechanical harvested,  grapes are de-stemmed and transferred into open 1 tonne fermentation pots. Juice was inoculated with a suitable yeast culture, the cap was hand plunged twice daily, with a total maceration time (on skins) of 30 days.
 
Maturation: A combination of French Oak and American Oak Barrels, 25% new for a period of 18 months.
 
Tasting Notes: Low yields & astute viticulture combined with Shiraz’s mid ripening make for grapes of wonderful balance, retaining acidity whilst still achieving sugar & flavour ripeness. The wine displays aromas of concentrated dark berry fruit, spicy pepper, eucalyptus undertones, fine grained tannins interwoven with vanilla oak.
